Winter athletes, coaches honored


ROCK HALL — A trio of student athletes and the Kent County High School girl's basketball coaches were recognized for their achievements this month.

The Kent County Board of Education honored wrestling standout Scottie Ford, track star Ramon "R.J." Peterson and swimming champion Henry Martinez during a meeting held Monday, April 14.

In addition coaches Tyray Johson, Chanelle Copper and Antoine Reid were honored for their dedication to the high school's girls basketball team.

Kent County High School Principal Kris Hemstetter was on hand to make the presentations with Director of Human Resources Dan Hushion, who also serves as the athletics supervisor for the school system.

Hemstetter spoke about Ford's remarkable accomplishments in athletics and leadership, noting his 31-4 record last wrestling season and fourth-place finish in the state championship tournament at the highly competitive 150-pound class.

"He continues to raise the bar for Trojan wrestling and serves as a leader in the program," Hemstetter said of Ford. "Coach Chris Yiannakis describes him as an athlete who sees perseverance as a tool to reach any goal, no matter how hard."

Peterson is a record-setter on the track, with Hemstetter noting his 36.24-second fifth-place finish in the 300-meter dash at the state indoor track championships.

"Impressively, this was the fourth time this winter he re-established the school record in that event, an incredible feat of consistency and drive," Hemstetter said. "R.J. brings that same energy and focus to everything he does."

Martinez is also recognized as a record-setter for Kent County High School, setting a new mark for 100-meter freestyle of 47.37 seconds and earning a state championship title. He also took silver in the 50-meter freestyle while setting another school record of 21.12 seconds.

"Henry's dominance in the pool is matched by his academic excellence. He is the proud recipient of the prestigious Banneker/Key Scholarship, the University of Maryland's premier full scholarship for top scholars across the state," Hemstetter said. "This full ride reflects Henry's dedication to his studies and his growth as a well rounded, driven student."

Johnson, Copper and Reid lead the girls basketball team to the regional finals, falling just short of bringing home the championship.
Johnson also was named North Bayside Varsity Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

"It goes without question that the coaching staff, led by head coach Tyray Johnson, with support from Chanelle Copper and Antoine Reid, have brought exceptional energy to rebuilding this program and the success and growth that their student athletes have achieved over time and will continue to," Hushion said.
